Shocking! The Art & Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli - This on-line exhibition celebrates the extraordinary creativity of the Italian-born designer, Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) who, together with Coco Chanel, dominated fashion between the two world wars.

Elsa Schiaparelli designed unusual, almost shocking garments. She invented shocking pink and introduced mad prints, buttons and accessories. She was the designer for hard chic, those who want to be shocking. Elsa introduced the upturned shoe hat which became very famous.


1938 - An evening cape by Elsa Schiaparelli. The Greek God Apollo rides in his chariot pulled by 5 horses in a magnificent celestial design. The embroidery was worked by the House of Lesage in gold sequins, beads, and thread on black velvet. Click on the image to see the details.
