Harper's Bazaar April 1965

This cover of Harpers Bazaar is a photograph of model Jean Shrimpton by photographer Richard Avedon. Art directors Ruth Ansel and Beatriz Feitler was responsible for this iconic Harper's Bazaar April 1965 cover. Jean Shrimpton is peering from behind a bright pink Day-Glo space helmet with the logo vibrating against it in acid green. It won the New York Art Director's Club medal and has been often reproduced as an emblem of the sixties.

The issue were produced with and without the lenticular blinking eye.

On October 17, 2005, the 40 greatest magazine covers of the last 40 years were unveiled at the 2005 American Magazine Conference (AMC) in Puerto Rico, by Mark Whitaker, Editor of Newsweek and President of American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME), and AMC Chairman Evan Smith, Editor of Texas Monthly. This issue placed #15 on the list.

In a 2005 Q&A with Bonnie Siegler, Ruth Ansel mentions the experience working on this issue:

"The outstanding experience for me working with Avedon was when he guest edited Bazaar’s April 1965 issue. It was an issue devoted to youth culture—Pop, Rock, and the Sexual Revolution. This issue was our attempt to create a magazine on the highest level. It was our way of conceptualizing a magazine from cover to cover with Dick [Avedon] acting as both the editor and

sole photographer. It flowed like a piece of music. It was
to tell everything that was current and future in art, fashion, science, and music.

We got permission from NASA to put model Jean Shrimpton in a space suit and photograph her on our cover and inside our issue as the first woman astronaut. It caused a sensation. That was well before its time, nobody believed a woman would become an astronaut, and of course we know differently now. We felt the magazine should reflect the sense of the contemporary scene at the time, so we asked rising talents like the sculptor George Segal, the painters Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg to work with us. The issue was filled with the newest and most advanced young writers—Renata Adler, Bruce Jay Friedman, and so on. But the issue scared a lot of people at the top at Bazaar. They had started to become concerned with the economics of the market and turned their back on anything original or artistic. This signaled that the ship was beginning to sink. Shortly thereafter, Dick left for Vogue to follow Vreeland, and a creative door had clearly been shut forever."

The World of Balenciaga March 23 - June 30, 1973

Just arrived in is a rare 1973 exhibition book, 'The World of Balenciaga'. The exhibition was curated by former Vogue editor Diana Vreeland. An Exhibition Presented by The Metropolitan Museum of Art Under the Auspices of The Government of Spain. March 23 - June 30, 1973.

Balenciaga was born in Guetaria, Spain, and many of his couture designs were inspired by a distinctly Spanish style, from his bullfighter "bolero" jackets to his use of madros, an ornamental trim of tassels, to his Goyaesque shapes and colors. The master couturier was responsible for the creation of the sack dress, the cocoon coat and the balloon skirt.

Elsa Schiaparelli: Empress of Fashion by Palmer White

Palmer White is a long-standing friend of Elsa Schiaparelli's only daughter, Gogo, la Marquise Cacciapuoti and so has had access to all the private family material. Foreward by Yves Saint Laurent.

Starting with knitwear, Schiaparelli's designs were heavily influenced by Surrealists like her collaborators Salvador Dalí and Alberto Giacometti. Below are some of her well known work.

Artist collaborations

Schiaparelli's relationship with the Dada and Surrealist movements continued in collaboration with Salvador Dalí, Leonor Fini, Jean Cocteau, and Alberto Giacometti. Chanel referred to her as 'that Italian artist who makes clothes'. Her collaborations with various artists contributed to the vast range and variety of her work.

Cocteau

In 1937 Schiaparelli collaborated with the artist Jean Cocteau to design a jacket and an evening coat for that year's Autumn collection.. The jacket was embroidered with a female figure with one hand caressing the waist of the wearer, and long blonde hair cascading down one sleeve. The coat featured two profiles facing each other, creating the optical illusion of a vase of roses. The embroidering of both garments was executed by the couture embroidery house of Lesage.

Dali

The designs Schiaparelli produced in collaboration with Dali are among her best known. While Schiaparelli did not name her designs, the four iconic Dali collaborations are popularly known as follows:

Lobster Dress

The 1937 Lobster Dress was a simple white silk evening dress with a crimson waistband featuring a large lobster painted (by Dali) onto the skirt. From 1934, Dali had started incorporating lobsters into his work, including New York Dream-Man Finds Lobster in Place of Phone shown in the magazine American Weekly in 1935, and the mixed-media Lobster Telephone (1936). His design for Schiaparelli was interpreted into a fabric print by the leading silk designer Sache. It was famously worn by Wallis Simpson in a series of photographs by Cecil Beaton taken at the Château de Candé shortly before her marriage to Edward VIII. The illustration here, from Vogue July 1937, shows the ready-to-wear version: a crisp white linen beach dress with a big hat ‘that is no more than a lobster-basket.’

Tears Dress

The Tears Dress was part of the February 1938 Circus Collection. It was a slender white evening gown printed with a Dali design of trompe l'oeil rips and tears, worn with a thigh-length veil with "real" tears, carefully cut out and lined in pink and magenta. Figures in ripped, skin-tight clothing suggesting flayed flesh appeared in some of Dali's paintings, including one owned by Schiaparelli.

Skeleton Dress

Dali also helped Schiaparelli design the Skeleton Dress for the Circus Collection.It was a stark black crepe dress which used trapunto quilting to create padded ribs, spine, and leg bones.

Shoe Hat

Schiaparelli's Fall-Winter 1937-38 collection featured a hat shaped like a woman's high heeled shoe, with the heel standing straight up and the toe tilted over the wearer's forehead.This was worn by Gala Dali, Schiaparelli herself, and by the Franco-American editor of the French Harper's Bazaar, heiress Daisy Fellowes, who was one of Schiaparelli's best clients.

The exhibition is arranged in four main themes - Inspiration looks at the myriad of sources including historicism, exoticism and the natural world; Creation explores the techniques, materials and processes; The Salon focuses on the buying and selling of hats and the millinery shop; and The Clients which examines the wearing and etiquette of hats and features headgear worn by well known clients of some of the world’s top milliners including Audrey Hepburn, Anna Piaggi, Dita von Teese.

Designer David Webb is known for his playful, bold, and colorful animal motif bangles and brooches that were worn by socialites and celebrities in the 1960s. Some of those iconic animal designs were reinterpreted for a 60th anniversary collection that was unveiled in company’s Madison Avenue boutique in New York in October. The rock crystal lion bangle, shown, is an example of the artist’s imaginative vision. Other signature pieces include turtles, frogs, and fish. Webb’s new designs are inspired by his recognizable past works, but he’s added a subtle twist for the next generation. Paco Rabanne became known as the enfant terrible of the French fashion world in the 1960s.

Rabanne started his career in fashion by creating jewellery for Givenchy, Dior and Balenciaga. He started his own fashion house in 1966. He used such unconventional materials as metal, paper and plastic for his outlandish and flamboyant designs.

Paco Rabanne is known for his costume designs for such films as Barbarella.

His well-known "Do it Yourself" Mod Rhodoid Plastic Disc Dress "Suitcase" Kit is shown below. Said Rabanne in 1966, "I defy anyone to design a hat, coat or dress that hasn't been done before...The only new frontier left in fashion is the finding of new materials". Enter in the disc dress made of small rhodoid plastic discs that are connected by metal jump rings to create a new kind of dress.
Rabanne even created a DIY kit fully stylized in a clear plastic (logo blazoned) suitcase to create the dress!

Princess Diana 'Dresses for Humanity' - Tampa Bay

The exhibit of 17 dresses includes the pink silk dress designed by Catherine Walker, Diana's favourite designer, for the princess' state tour of India in 1992. It's one of 13 dresses that Tampa businesswoman Maureen Rorech Dunkel bought for nearly $700,000 at a Christie's charity auction just two months before the princess was killed in a car crash in 1997.
Rorech Dunkel (below)who serves as board chairwoman for the University of Tampa, decided to keep Diana's legacy alive by forming the People's Princess foundation and sending the dresses on a world tour that would raise money for various causes.
Most of Rorech Dunkel's collection, which now totals 15 dresses, is currently on a 10-year loan to Kensington Palace in London. But the palace doesn't display all the pieces at once, and Rorech Dunkel was given two gowns to lay the foundation for what she has dubbed the Dresses for Humanity II tour.

Diana, Princess of Wales Dress Collection

In the years following her marriage to Prince Charles in 1981, Princess Diana was the most celebrated model of British clothing since Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy. She commissioned scores of elegant dresses by designers such as Catherine Walker and Victor Edelstein, wearing them at events that ranged from London movie premieres to official tours of the Commonwealth.

In 1997, just months before her death, Princess Diana had 79 of her dresses auctioned by Christie's to raise money for humanitarian causes. Fourteen of the dresses were acquired by philanthropist Maureen Rorech Dunkel of Tampa, Florida, who sent them on a worldwide "Dresses for Humanity" fundraising tour. The dresses are now on permanent display in Kensington Palace.

This exhibition at Kensington Palace focuses on the development of the Princess’s style from the romantic ruffles of the early 1980s to the sophisticated silhouette of the mid 1990s. The exhibition of twelve dresses features seven never before displayed at Kensington Palace. For conservation reasons not all of Diana’s dresses are on display at any one time.

Martha Stewart - Glamour's 1961 Best Dressed College Girl

While in high school, Martha Stewart began modeling for upscale department stores in New York City and subsequently appeared in several television commercials and fashion magazines. Stewart was offered a full scholarship to New York University but declined in order to attend Barnard College, where she studied art history while supporting herself through modeling.

Stewart's modeling career was given a boost in 1961 when she was named by Glamour magazine as one of America's 10 best-dressed college students—but just barely. "I was a runner up," said Stewart. "Barnard put me up for this. One of the top ten got pregnant or flunked out, so I got the call!" But Stewart gamely rose to the occasion, mounting a prop flagpole and posing in a vivid orange cape with the rest of the girls, telling the magazine, "I want a simple life: a house in the country."

Later that year she married Andrew Stewart, a student at Yale Law School. Stewart graduated from Barnard in 1963 and continued modeling in New York while her husband established his law career.

Halston 1932-90, American fashion designer, b. Des Moines, Iowa as Roy Halston Frowick; attended Indiana Univ. and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1958 he moved to New York City, designing hats for Lilly Daché and later (1959-68) millinery and clothing for the fashionable Bergdorf Goodman department store.

He acquired many notable clients including Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich, Diana Vreeland, Mrs. William (Babe) Paley, and Mrs. Henry Ford II. Many of his designs bordered on the fantastic; he used mirrors, fringe, jewels, and flowers to decorate hoods, bonnets, coifs, and helmets. His innovative scarf hat was a much-copied design of the 1960s, and Jacqueline Kennedy made his pillbox hat famous.

Bergdorf Goodman offered him an opportunity to design clothes in 1966, and his first ready-to-wear collection was sold in the Halston boutique at the store. This arrangement was short lived. He left Bergdorf Goodman in 1967, and it closed the boutique upon his departure.

Opening his own salon in 1968, Halston became one of the most acclaimed designers of the 1970s, a favorite of movie stars, art-world denizens, and the general public, and a disco-era celebrity in his own right. His designs were classically simple, elegant, and chic. He introduced Ultrasuede, popularized the cashmere twinset, caftan, halter dress, shirtwaist, spiral skirt, and knee-length pants, and added perfumes and luggage to his label. He also designed costumes for the Martha Graham Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and various stage and film productions.

Halston Mohawk hat from the millinery salon at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. This must be one of the most unusual hats to ever come out of that store.

A narrow rigid band, the hat is held in place by a small comb at the front. Shiny black feathers rise from this band forming a Mohawk hat, most likely inspired by the hairstyle of some Native Americans rather than by the youth culture.

On March 10, the remaining six designers of the Gemini award-winning reality series was challenged to create an artistic evening gown using many variations of a single innovative product, the Post-it Note.

Each designer was paired with a woman afflicted with breast cancer who modeled the creations that were auctioned off to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The winning pink/green dress was made by Jessica (right). (Post-it 3M purchased the gown through auction for $10,000)

Having just got back from San Francisco De Young Museum where the Yves Saint Laurent Exhibition was held, I was motivated to check out the some ads or editiorials with YSL dresses. Found this ad in L'Officiel October 1965 Issue (also on display at the museum). YSL's wool jersey dress was a tribute to Piet Mondrian's painting: Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow, 1930.

Another block version from YSL, September 1965 Queen magazine:

He demonstrated a feat of dressmaking, setting in each block of jersey, piecing in order to create the semblance of the Mondrian order and to accommodate the body imperceptibly by hiding all the shaping in the grid of seams.

Found some beautiful 1979 Gia Carangi Christian Dior ads. Gia was a supermodel in the late 70s and early 80s. After becoming addicted to drugs, Carangi's modeling career rapidly declined. She later became infected with HIV and died in Philadelphia. Carangi is thought to be one of the first famous women to die of AIDS.

Just in our on-line store, we received an extremely rare 1982 Publication of the book "Valentino", by Andre Leon Talley and edited by Franco Maria Ricci 20 September, Valentino presents his Autumn/Winter collection at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Limited edition #368 of 6000 copies. Folio. Black silk, lettered in gilt, with design in color on cover. With complete chronology of Valentino’s achievements in the fashion industry. Text in English and Italian, interleaved with fine reproductions of Valentino’s designs and tipped-in photos of his finished creations. Best known as Jackie Kennedy’s designer, Valentino has come to represent the tasteful as well as the elegant in high fashion. The book is illustrated in colour throughout with full page tipped in plates of costume and fashion designs, photographs and Valentino drawings. The book is printed on grey hand-made paper by the Pietro Miliani Mills at Fabriano. A lavish homage to Valentino.

Harry Winston

Harry Winston (March 1, 1896 – December 8, 1978) was an American jeweller. He donated the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958 after owning it for a decade. He once sent a 726 carat (145 g) rough diamond, "The Jonker", through the US Postal Service, foregoing other more conventional means of secure transfer.

Harry Winston's jewelry empire began with his acquisition of Arabella Huntington's famous jewelry collection.. The wife of railroad magnate Henry Huntington, Arabella amassed one of the world's most prestigious collections of jewelry, largely from Parisian jewelers such as Cartier.

When Harry Winston purchased the collection after her death, the designs of the collection were quite old fashioned. Harry Winston redesigned the jewelry into more contemporary styles and showcased his unique skill at jewelry crafting. According to the Huntington museum: "He frequently boasted that Arabella’s famous necklace of pearls now adorned the necks of at least two dozen women around the world."

One famous quote of his is, "People will stare. Make it worth their while."

Wilhelmina Cooper

Wilhelmina (1940–March 1, 1980) was a supermodel who began with Ford Models and, at the peak of her success, founded her own agency, Wilhelmina Models, in New York City in 1967.

Born Wilhelmina Behmenburg in The Netherlands, she was known professionally as simply "Wilhelmina" or "Willy" to intimates. She moved with her family to Chicago, Illinois, USA, in 1954. She married Bruce Cooper, former executive producer of the Johnny Carson The Tonight Show in 1965.

Eileen Ford was hurt and angry at first when she learned that one of "her own" that she had built and groomed was to become the competition. Internationally known at the time, known for working hard, she knew everyone in the fashion industry. She called top photographers that she had worked with extensively, to share her excitement over her new venture. To her credit, she was able to translate her knowledge of the business, and give new talent a look based on her own personal philosophy of beauty, glamour and elegance. Wilhelmina Models became the other leading model agency with Fords years before Elite and other agencies began.

Cooper was portrayed by Faye Dunaway in the 1998 movie Gia which tells the story of Gia Marie Carangi, a supermodel, who was discoved by Wilhelmina Cooper and later died of AIDS.

She continued to guide the agency into the late 1970s until her premature death from lung cancer at the age of 40 in Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich, Connecticut.

She was a resident of New York City and Cos Cob, Connecticut.

A Touch of Sable

He paints, is a huge success with the ladies, is vastly entertaining. He is also 26, handsome, slender, Italian, and of noble birth. A phenomenon of the art world? Not at all. He is Manhattan's newest status symbol: Pablo of Elizabeth Arden.

Known on the Continent as a visa-giste, or makeup man, Pablo does for faces what Kenneth does for hair, and he is increasingly becoming a necessary part of the well-dressed sophisticate's beauty routine. "I've never seen an ugly woman," says Pablo. Certainly not after he is through with her. Pablo takes run-of-the-mill eyes and transforms them into haunting pools of promise fringed by luxuriant thickets. His tools may be available to everyone, but today's makeup look is so complex that it requires the skill and patience of a professional to apply.

Hollywood has known this for years. There George Masters, 27, who transformed Lynda Bird Johnson for April's Oscar ceremonies, currently works over the likes of Doris Day and Rita Hayworth at $100 a sitting. Former MGM and Paramount Makeup Director Eddie Senz, 57, long ago brought his talents to Manhattan, where he caters to Broadway actors and members of the Great Society (Lady Bird attended the Inauguration with makeup by Senz). But it took an Italian who paints crazy eyes for the art to really catch on.

Hateful Eyebrows. The son of Count Zappi-Manzoni, Pablo arrived self-taught from Arden's Rome salon two years ago with a bagful of tricks (beige foundation, pink and white eyeshadow). He took the fashion world by storm with a series of eye fantasies for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in which he used peacock feathers, sequins, lace, flower petals, even diamonds, all painstakingly pasted onto eyelids in fanciful designs. Some eyes took as long as five hours to do, but they made the magazine covers, earned Pablo special beauty awards and the run of Elizabeth Arden's Fifth Avenue salon. There a covey of beauties (Virna Lisi, Anne McDonnell Ford and Stephanie Javits) flock for his touch at $20 a half-hour session.

Pablo is not a snob, but his views are crisply delivered. "I did jeweled eyes for the magazines, and now women call and say they want them," he moans. "It is not to be believed." Pablo has strong dislikes: "Pink foundation is awful, green eyeshadow is vulgar, eyebrows are hateful, dark lipstick is obsolete." What he favors, and has made fashionable, is makeup that shows yet seems effortless: healthy, glowing skin, light lipstick, and fascinating, fluttering eyes—"the only part really worth making up."

Interesting Defect. Pablo's art requires the touch of a miniaturist, the steadiness of a demolition expert. He has both, plus an assorted palette of six watercolor shades and seven sable brushes of various sizes and shapes—shaving-brush thick for blush powder, pencil-thin for under-eyeliner. Eyes are made up as much as possible: double, even triple rows of false eyelashes ("Doesn't everybody own at least three pairs?"), and the rest a subtle blending of watercolor tones: black eyeliner, then white, light brown, dark brown (in the crease of the eyelid), light brown again, ending with gold or white lightener under the brow.
Makeup must never become a mask, Pablo insists. "Even a so-called defect can be interesting," he says. He had Italian Beauty Donna Livia Aldobrandini's Roman nose photographed in profile for Town & Country. "The more crooked the better," he stated firmly. "Don't try to hide what you think is bad; just wear it proudly."
